Quite possibly the BEST Italian bread in America. Schenectady’s Perreca Bakery (33 N Jay Street) is just the type of “off-the-beaten” path joint that ForgottenBuffalo.com loves. Located in the “Electric City’s” Little Italy neighborhood, Perreca’s brick oven bread is made the old-fashion way. It's crispy on the outside, but a quarter of the way through the first bite you find just the right amount of chewy, fresh bread. Forgotten Buffalo discovered the bakery early on Saturday morning. The bread was still warm and the smell of the tiny store was sweet. Small family bakeries like Perreca's aren't easy to find anymore. This one opened its doors back in 1914 and three generations later, the family is still baking. Jack Nicholson is said to have discovered Perreca's Bakery while filming a movie in the area a number of years back and to this day, gets fresh Perreca’s bread deleveried to him on a regular basis. Maria Perreca Papa, who runs Perreca's with her brother, Anthony Perreca Papa, said the bakery still does many things the old-fashioned way, like rolling out the Toralli bread sticks by hand. That's the product their customers want, and the Papas don't want to take on the debt required to expand or modernize operations.Thank goodness for that.
