Evolution of Buffalo's Chippewa Entertainment District

In the early 1800s the corner of Pearl and Chippewa Streets marked the limits of the Village of Buffalo. During the 1960s and 70s, the area was regarded as the City’s "red light" district hosting a number of seedy taverns, topless clubs, cheap hotels and pornography shops. The street's fortunes began to change when local entrepreneur Mark Goldman restored the Calumet Building in the early-1990s bringing with it a wave of nightlife development. By the mid-90s, almost every building between Main Street and Delaware Avenue was renovated into a bar or nightclub. Since re-inventing itself into Buffalo’s primary entertainment district, Chippewa has fallen victim to the cyclical nature of the bar business with many of the original 1990s establishment being re-named or rebuilt over the last 15 years.
